Archeology and Culture

The Tuscan Maremma boasts a historical heritage.
The different cultures that populated these lands have left numerous testimonies of their presence through the archaeological remains, medieval castles, churches, abbeys, and villages distributed throughout the territory.

The Maremma saw important Etruscan and Roman dominations and the cities of Populonia and Roselle are evidence of this. During the Middle Ages, the Aldobrandeschi ruled this territory leaving an architectural heritage consisting of castles and fortified villages such as those of Santa Fiora and Sovana. Even the Medici, and the Lorrena years later, lived in these lands, as the mighty Medici walls of Grosseto remind us. In fact, the Medici began the reclamation of the Maremma, which ended after the Second World War.
